The Science Behind the Syrup

Our range of syrups are not only delicious. Other than what you can taste, each also contains four proprietary formulations, working behind the scenes to deliver four distinct benefits. Designed to work in synergy with each other, here we explain some of the science behind our formulations and the effects that they have on the body.

Caffeine - 150mg

Caffeine is a natural substance found in the fruit and leaves of certain plants and acts as a stimulant to the central nervous system. It takes effect within the body within 30-60 minutes and its effects typically last up to 6 hours. When taken in small doses, has three main effects on the body:

Increases Alertness

Your body naturally produces a substance called adenosine. This is a an inhibitory neurotransmitter that can act as a can act as a central nervous system depressant. It acts by blocking other neurotransmitters that excite the brain. During the day, our bodies create adenosine and at night, when we sleep, adenosine levels naturally decrease.

Caffeine’s molecular structure is similar to adenosine. It acts by binding with the same receptors as adenosine, thereby preventing adenosine from reaching our brain. By preventing adenosine from reaching the brain, caffeine keeps us awake and alert.

Boosts Energy

By blocking the binding of adenosine, caffeine allows other neurotransmitters that stimulate the brain to act. This leads to the pituitary gland, releasing hormones that cause the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline. Adrenaline (or epinephrine) is also known as the “fight or flight” hormone and causes a noticeable increase in strength and performance, as well as heightened awareness.

Improves Mood

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that makes us feel good. It is always present in the brain, but elevated levels lead to in improvement in mood. As an example, this happens naturally after exercise. It's the reason behind the "high" that you feel after going for a run.

Whilst caffeine doesn't increase the amount of dopamine that is released, slows the rate at which dopamine leaves our brains and returns to our bodies leading to elevated dopamine levels for a time.

Also, studies have found that people who consume caffeine regularly have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as a 45% reduced risk of suicide. It is thought that dopamine plays a key role in this.

Taurine - 1200mg

Taurine is an aminosulfonic acid which is found naturally in meat, fish, eggs and also occurs naturally in the human body. Unlike caffeine, taurine is not a stimulant. Rather, caffeine and taurine perfectly complement each other in that they both improve physical and mental performance. However, taurine also offers a number of other benefits so you will find it present in more than one of our formulations.

In recent years, much research including several publications by the NIH show that a diet rich in taurine has a positive effect on energy metabolism. This is the process of generating energy (adenosine triphosphate) from nutrients that you consume.

Whilst caffeine directly stimulates the brain, taurine has more of a symbiotic relationship with caffeine in that it allows muscles to work harder and for longer and increased the muscles’ ability to contract and produce force. It has been shown to remove waste products that lead to fatigue and cause muscle burn and also protects muscles from cell damage and oxidative stress.

In addition to these performance benefits, taurine may aid weight loss by increasing your body’s use of fat for fuel. In a 2010 NIH study, cyclists that supplemented their diet with taurine increased fat burning by 16%.

Vitamin C - 250mg

You've probably heard about the benefits of vitamin C for the immune system, but a little known fact about this versatile micronutrient is its role in reducing fatigue. Studies have shown that people who who have vitamin C deficiency often feel fatigued and see marked improvements after receiving vitamin C. There are also published links to a lowering in anxiety levels.

Vitamin B12 - 0.6mcg

Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin found naturally in many foods including meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. Whilst needed by the body in very small doses, it helps maintain healthy nerves cells, supports brain function, and aids in the production of red blood cells and DNA.

Vitamin B12 is also an essential component in helping your body to process carbohydrates from the foods you eat into glucose. It aids your body to naturally create energy, lifts brain fog, and increases alertness.

Despite the importance of vitamin B12, a large percentage of people are deficient in this vitamin. Vegetarians and vegans especially are at a higher risk of vitamin B12 deficiency because the vitamin is most commonly found in meats, poultry, and dairy.
